Our accounting connection asks to be re-authorised roughly once a month. Reconnecting works immediately and everything syncs, then it drops again.

Not something you are doing wrong. Most accounting providers expire a connection that has been idle for a set period, and "idle" means no successful sync — not no activity in your workspace.
If the connection only has entities that rarely change, it can go long enough between syncs to trip the idle timer even though the integration is working perfectly.
Adding one frequently-changing entity to the sync usually keeps it alive on its own.
