Summary Once a module's content is complete, you add its quiz in the Module Publisher: you add each question, then its possible answers, and tick the correct one. A good quiz mixes question types, such as multiple choice with four answers, true or false, and questions with more open-ended answer choices. You can edit or delete any question or answer.
Steps
Introduction. Quizzes are great for learning because they reinforce knowledge through active recall and repetition, helping students retain information longer. They also provide immediate feedback, highlight areas for improvement, and boost confidence by confirming what students know.
Adding a multiple-choice question
Step 1
Finish your module's content in the Module Publisher first. The quiz tests what the module teaches.
Step 2
Click the quiz button at the top left of the Module Publisher, under the PaT logo: the second of the three icons, a cloud with a ticked list. The create/edit module quiz window opens, with Question(s) on the left and Answers on the right.
Step 3
To create the first question, click the + at the right end of the Question(s) heading. The add a new question box opens.
Step 4
Look back at the module's content and pick a fact to test, such as one detail from a note.
Step 5
Type your question in the box, then click Done to its right. The question appears in the Question(s) list, with an ID number in front of it.
Step 6
To change the question, click the edit icon (a pencil on a page) at the right end of its row. To delete it, click the bin icon below that.
Step 7
If you are happy with the question, click it so that it is highlighted grey. You must do this before you add its answers.
Step 8
Click the + at the right end of the Answers heading. The Add an answer box opens.
Step 9
Type a possible answer and click Done. Repeat for each answer, making sure one of them is the correct one. Each answer appears in the Answers list.
Tip. PaT recommends 4 possible answers. Psychological studies have shown that 4 options give an optimal level of difficulty and cognitive load for test-takers. Fewer options can make the question too easy, while more options can overwhelm the test-taker.
Step 10
To finalise the question, tick the box of the correct answer, in the T/F column at the left of the answers. A Correct Answer updated message shows at the bottom left of the screen.
Adding a true or false question
Step 11
To create another question, click the + at the right end of the Question(s) heading again.
Step 12
Vary the question types. It's beneficial to design a quiz with a variety of them: after a multiple-choice question with four options, switch it up with a true or false question, based on another fact from the module.
Step 13
Type a true or false statement as the question, then click Done.
Step 14
Remember to click the new question so that it is highlighted grey before you move over to the answers. Then add two answers, True and False, with the + at the right end of the Answers heading.
Step 15
Tick the box of the correct answer. True or false questions can be answered quickly by test-takers, a large range of content can be tested with them, and they are easy to create.
Adding a question with open-ended answer choices
Step 16
To add a final question, click the + at the right end of the Question(s) heading.
Step 17
Make this question more open-ended: it should require students to recall what they learned in the module and draw on the mental connections they formed while studying.
Step 18
Type the question and click Done. Then click it so that it is highlighted grey.
Step 19
Add the answers with the + at the right end of the Answers heading.
Step 20
Write answer choices that are more open-ended. Although quizzes may not support true open-ended questions, you can still offer more open-ended answer choices. This helps deepen the student's understanding and reinforces their knowledge more effectively.
Step 21
You can also vary the responses by making several answers correct, then adding an answer that says which options were correct, such as "Answers B, C, and D". Tick that answer as the correct one.
Step 22
To delete an answer, click the bin icon at the right end of its row. An Answer deleted message shows at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 23
To edit an answer, click the edit icon at the right end of its row, just above the bin.
Step 24
Another way to vary the responses is an "All of the above" answer: delete any answer that is not correct, then edit the combined answer to read "All of the above", and keep it ticked as the correct one.
