Summary You can create your own categories for an SD's elements, each with a name, a colour and an order number, and then give any element one of them from a list on its row. You create the categories in SD Categories, under the SD's Advanced tab. Categorising elements helps you organise your progress and, paired with the traffic light system, makes priorities clearer to identify and manage.
Steps
Step 1
In the SD, click Advanced, the first of the grey tabs above the column headings. A menu opens on the left of the screen.
Step 2
Click SD Categories, the last item in the menu. The Categories page opens: the SD's categories are listed on the left, and the boxes for a category are on the right.
Step 3
Click New Category, at the bottom of the Categories list.
Step 4
Type the category's name in CategoryName, the first box. Note: Keep the name as short as possible, so the whole name is visible in the SD. Long names are cut off.
Step 5
In CategoryColor, below it, type the name of the colour you want, such as Red.
Step 6
In CategoryOrder, type a number. It sets the sequence in which the category appears in your list of categories: 1 comes first.
Step 7
Leave CategoryAction, the last box, set to No Action.
Step 8
Click Save, at the bottom right of the page. The category appears in the Categories list on the left, showing its name, colour, action and order.
Step 9
To add another category, click New Category again and repeat Steps 4-8. Continue until you have all of your categories. There is no limit on the number of categories you can create, and you can always come back and add more.
Step 10
To delete a category, click it in the Categories list, then click Delete, at the bottom of the page between New Category and Save.
Step 11
When you have created all the categories you want, click Back to SD, at the top of the menu on the left. The SD opens again.
Categorising SD elements
Step 12
Find an element you want to categorise. On its row, click the downward arrow at the right end of the description, just left of the Action By column.
Step 13
A list of your categories opens, in their order. Click the category that fits the element: for example, if the element is waiting on someone, choose the category you made for that.
Step 14
The category's name now shows on the element's row, in a box outlined in the category's colour.
Step 15
Categorise the rest of the elements the same way. Paired with the traffic light system, the categories help you organise your progress effectively, and make priorities clearer to identify and manage.
